Mr. Carradine's death was the result of autoerotic asphyxiation, and has subsequently become a frequently-used comedic reference (for example, in the RiffTrax of Batman's Last Chance when Kevin riffs "Can't a butler pull a Carradine in the broom closet in peace?").

No ha destacado mayormente en el mundo del estrellato del cine, pues quedó encasillada su imagen en la serie Kung Fu, que originalmente iba a ser interpretada por Bruce Lee pero no fue así porque éste tenía rasgos demasiado asiáticos. De hecho, las posteriores participaciones de Carradine con frecuencia han visado las artes marciales (El círculo de hierro, R. Moore 1978; McQuade Lobo solitario, 1983). Curiosamente Carradine apenas tenía conocimientos sobre artes marciales con anterioridad a su actuación en la serie Kung Fu, pero desarrolló un gran interés por ellas a raíz de la serie, llegando a convertirse en un ávido practicante e incluso a escribir un libro sobre el tema. En cuanto al cine y destacantado, ha interpretado el papel de Bill en la película de Quentin Tarantino Kill Bill, actuando junto a Uma Thurman. Además fue parte de una serie de "fantasmas" en la que famosos ingresaban a distintos lugares donde se encontraban con espiritus, y David, era parte guía y persona de experiencia para ello llamado "Celebrity Paranormal Project" en el canal VH1. También actuará en la segunda temporada de Tiempo Final, serie latinoamericana trasmitida por el canal Fox.
