Apart from being frakkin' adorable, it helped to launch YUI's career and was screened at the Cannes Film Festival when it was released. Meet Kaoru, just your everyday female high school student. Every morning, she stares wistfully out her window at the cute surfer boy at the bus stop across the street, and dreams of meeting him one day. Too bad the sunlight would kill her. You see, Kaoru suffers from Xeroderma Pigmentosum, which is most easily explained as an allergy to sunlight. Symptoms include skin problems, bodily weakness, and oh yeah, constriction of the brain. Thanks to her watchful parents and understanding friend, she's avoided the worst, but still has to stay inside all day (which does wonders for her social life). To get through it all, she sings and plays guitar at the local train station every night, returning before sunrise. And wouldn't you know it, she just happens to run into her mystery surfer boy. It's a doozy. As one of the most heartwarming films in recent memory, it desperately Needs More Love, if not for the story, then for YUI's awesome songwriting.
* Award Bait Song: "Goodbye Days", which is still YUI's biggest hit to date. It's a subversion, though: She spends the whole movie writing it, and an orchestral version is used in the background throughout the film as opposed to only the end credits.

And, indeed, something got very out of hand on August 28, 2008, when somebody leaked a partial draft of Midnight Sun. According to Meyer (who, it seems, is not the best judge of character), different versions of the manuscript were given "to trusted individuals for a good purpose." For instance, she gave one to Robert Pattinson so he could better understand his character. It is rumored that it is he who leaked in revenge of having to play Edward. When she received news of this leak, Meyer issued a statement that stated; "I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.With this she ☀revealed herself to the world for 13 year old girl that she is. When news that Midnight Sun was canceled hit the Twilight fandom, there was an uproar. Many fangirls rushed to comfort Meyer, in an attempt to get her to restart work on Midnight Sun. These attempts failed, to the relief of many, who did not wish to read several hundred pages of Edward whining about how stupid humans are. Since Stephanie Meyer has stated that she won't work on the book again until she has not heard about it for at least two years, people who do not want to see this further violation of the English language published may wish to pointedly bring it up at 729/730-day intervals. Once the Twilight fad calms down, Smeyer will write Midnight Sun in order to get her fans back. It's only a matter of time before she notices her fans leaving to do something else.

The opposite phenomenon, polar night, occurs in winter when the sun stays below the horizon throughout the day. Since the Earth's axis is tilted with respect to the ecliptic by approximately 23 degrees 27 minutes, the sun does not set at high latitudes in (local) summer. The duration of the midnight sun increases from one day during the summer solstice at the polar circle to approximately six months at the poles. At extreme latitudes, it is usually referred to as polar day. The length of the time the sun is above the horizon varies from 20 hours at the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle to 186 days at the poles. At the poles themselves, the sun only rises once and sets once, each year. During the six months when the sun is above the horizon at the poles, the sun spends the days constantly moving around the horizon, reaching its highest circuit of the sky at the summer solstice. Due to refraction, the midnight sun may be experienced at latitudes slightly below the polar circle, though not exceeding one degree (depending on local conditions). For example, it is possible to experience the midnight sun in Iceland, even though most of it (Grímsey being a notable exception) is slightly south of the Arctic Circle. Even the northern extremities of Scotland (and those places on similar latitudes) experience a permanent "dusk" or glare in the northern skies at these times.
