She formed her first group at the age of 13 performing heavy metal songs, and in 1989 met poet Karen Kavaleryan (who went on to write several Eurovision songs) who helped her launch a professional career. Maria went on to do voice dubbing for several films and TV shows including the film Anastasia, for which she was presented with an award by 20th Century Fox for the best performance in a native language. In 2015, she auditioned for the 4th season of Golos, the Russian version of The Voice. The first to turn their chair during her blind audition was 2015 Russian Eurovision representative Polina Gagarina. Today she still performs in clubs, provides backing vocals for famous performers, and works as a vocal coach.
