  • Born in Portsmouth as Syeda Sophia Haque to a Bangladeshi father and British mother, she was the youngest of three children. Having moved to London at the age of thirteen she trained full-time at the Arts Educational Schools. As the lead singer in the band called Akasa she got a record deal with Warner Brothers in 1988, before working as a presenter for MTV Asia. Haque moved to India in 1997 and starred in a string of films with some of the biggest names in Bollywood, before returning to the UK to appear in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams, a musical version of The Far Pavilions. She also appeared alongside Angelina Jolie in the hit film Wanted and had most recently appeared in Privates on Parade as part of the Michael Grandage season in the West End. Living in Knaphill, Surrey, with her partner - musical director David White, the couple were in the process of building a houseboat when she fell ill just before Christmas 2012 and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer. While undergoing tests she developed a clot on her lungs and died at a London hospital.
