  • Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic depressive disorder, is a diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders. These mood disorders are defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated energy levels with or without one or more depressive episodes. Known individuals residing in Port Charles that have Bipolar Disorder include Sonny Corinthos (as well as his portrayer Maurice Benard), and his son, Morgan.
  • Bipolar Disorder used to be called Manic depression. Typically it involves periods of extreme drug-like happiness when the world seems much better than it is. These are interspersed with times of painful and possibly deadly depression when world seems much worse than it is. Doctors have drugs which control it.
  • Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, was a mental condition characterized by alternating periods of extreme moods. In one stage, the individual could be in a mania, in which they were intense happy, excitable, energetic, and focused on completing tasks. However, this was followed by periods of depression. Drugs could help, but not totally remove the condition. Manic depression was one of a number of handicaps that randomly afflicted Grey Orions, due to their genetic mutilation. • Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental illness that causes unusual shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe.
  • The duration and intensity of mood states varies widely among people with the illness. Fluctuating from one mood state to another is called "cycling" or having mood swings. Cycling causes impairment not only in one's mood, but also in one's energy level, sleep pattern, activity level, social rhythms, and thinking abilities. Many people become fully disabled for significant periods of time, during which they have great difficulty functioning.
  • Bipolar disorder, often referred to as manic-depression in the general literature, is a psychiatric condition defined by periods of extreme mood. These moods can occur on a spectrum ranging from debilitating depression to unbridled mania. Individuals suffering a bipolar disorder generally experience fluid states of mania, hypomania or what is referred to as a mixed states in concert with clinical depression. These clinical states typically alternate with a normal range of mood, which is termed euthymia. Bipolar disorder can range in severity from a mild annoyance to a serious lifelong disability.

There are many variations of this disorder. A person with bipolar disorder generally tends to experience more extreme states of mood than other people, even within the context of what might be considered "normal". Moods can change quickly (many times a day) or last for months. In psychiatric terms, this is called fast cycling or slow cycling, respectively. Bipolar individuals tend to have very "black and white" thinking, where everything in life is either a positive aspect or a negative. Mood patterns of this nature are associated with distress and disruption, and a relatively high risk of suicide. Bipolar disorder is usually treated with medication and counseling. Bipolar disorder is sometimes comorbid with autism and Asperger syndrome.

Cycling causes impairment not only in one's mood, but also in one's energy level, sleep pattern, activity level, social rhythms, and thinking abilities. Many people become fully disabled for significant periods of time, during which they have great difficulty functioning. Bipolar Disorder is thought to be based on biological conditions in the brain which may cause the chemical imbalance in serotonin and norepinephrine levels usually attributed to depression.

  • Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental illness that causes unusual shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. The disease typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. However, some people have their first symptoms during childhood, and some develop them late in life. It is often not recognized as an illness or may be mistaken for (unipolar) depression, and people may suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person’s life. There are two main forms of bipolar disorder: type 1 and type 2. The difference is based mostly on the "high high's." Bipolar disorder type 1 has manic episodes. Type 2 has hypomanic episodes which never reach the full intenisty of true mania. For the individual with bipolar type 2, the depressive episodes are the real problem as those tend to be more frequent and more severe.
