Although invented by old white men, which is usually a good thing, most were godless communists or, worse yet, French. Sociology takes everything that our gut tells us to be true and makes it boring with facts. For example, one member of the sociological Factinista once wrote an article entitled "Banana Time," which found that workers in boring jobs goof off to pass time. Everyone already knew that, but now we know it in a really boring way thanks to sociology.

A scientist who studies in this discipline is known as a sociologist. A sociologist named Lindstrom was assigned to the USS Enterprise in 2267, and assisted Captain Kirk in his dealings with the people of Beta III. After Kirk destroyed the computer Landru (which was keeping the society of Beta III stagnant and unchanged), Lindstrom remained behind with a team of experts to help guide the civilization back to a healthier form. Sociology's first belief (derived from Algebraic philosophy) is that for every bearded intellectual who expresses his opinion, there will always be another bearded intellectual who expresses the opposite. And a bearded intellectual who expresses an opinion in between the first two. Sociology's second belief is that these opinions actually make a difference.

It is a social science involving the study of the social lives of people, groups, and societies, sometimes defined as the study of social interactions. As an academic discipline, sociology is relatively young, having evolved in the early 19th century. Because sociology is such a broad discipline, it can be difficult to define, even for professional sociologists. One useful way to describe the discipline is as a cluster of sub-fields that examine different dimensions of society. For example, social stratification studies inequality and class structure; demography studies changes in a population size or type; criminology examines criminal behavior and deviance; political sociology studies government and laws; and the sociology of race and sociology of gender examine the social construction of race and gender as well as race and gender inequality in society. New sociological sub-fields continue to appear—such as network analysis—many of which are cross-disciplinary in nature. Many sociologists perform research useful outside the academy. Their findings aid educators, lawmakers, administrators, developers, business leaders and people interested in resolving social problems and formulating public policy.
