- "Sur le pont d'Avignon" was a French song. In 2369, Captain Jean-Luc Picard sang the first two lines to this song while being interrogated on Celtris III by Gul Madred. (TNG: "Chain of Command, Part II" ) The song was originally composed by the 16th century composer Pierre Certon, and then put to a different melody in 1853 in Adolphe Adam's operetta l'Auberge Pleine. The bridge (pont) in the song was Pont St-Bénezet, which originally spanned the Rhône River between Avignon and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. In each verse, only the fifth line is changed. There are many variations to this song, and, in fact, the first version was actually "Sous le pont..." (Under the bridge...).
