  • 53, the co-owner of J. Poli, Inc., an innovative and successful business on Pittsburgh's South Side, a man with a brilliant mind whose passion for living and generosity of spirit loomed even larger than his own 6' 7" frame, died unexpectedly on December 5, 2008. The memory of his absolute love for his large family must sustain them now. A loving and wonderful husband and father, Michael is survived by his wife Juli (Cerlan) and daughters Madison, Alina, and Kendall. Michael was a devoted son to Michael Milan Sr. and Helen Milan, a caring "big" brother to Michelle, Helene, Mara, Peter and Lisa and to their spouses, and was deeply involved in the lives of his nieces and nephews, Ollie, Tony, Mark, Christopher, Shane, Max, Sydney, Peter and Eleni. Michael's absence will be painfully felt by his immediate family as well as by his surviving aunts, uncles and cousins. An American poet once observed that "a bolt of lightning strikes but an inch of the earth but it lights up the whole horizon." Michael was a bolt of lightning in the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His light will be missed. A celebration of Michael's vibrant life will occur on Saturday, December 13th from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the South Baldwin Hall, 5311 McAnnulty Road 15236 (www.sbsocialhall.com). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Brashear Association, 2005 Sarah Street, Pittsburgh 15203, or to an education fund for Michael's daughters, c/o James Eiben, First National Bank, 1114 East Carson Street, Pittsburgh 15203.
