- Die Ered Gorgoroth (elbisch: schreckliche Angst), auch als Berge des Grauens bekannt, war eine Bergkette im Norden von Beleriand und der südliche Rand von Dorthonion. Seine Namen stammten daher, dass Ungoliant und dessen Brut vorübergehend am Fuß des unbewohnten Nan Dungortheb lebten, die alles Licht wegnahmen, alle Reisenden töteten und alles um sich herum vergifteteten. Alle, die von Wassern dort tranken, vielen dem Wahnsinn anheim.

Beren soll die erste und einzige Person gewesen sein, die diese Passage versuchte und überlebte. Gesprochen hat er allerdings über diese Reise nie.
