  • Knowledge of Solon is limited by the lack of documentary and archeological evidence covering Athens in the early 6th century BCE. He wrote poetry for pleasure, as patriotic propaganda, and in defence of his constitutional reforms. His works only survive in fragments. They appear to feature interpolations by later authors and it is possible that fragments have been wrongly attributed to him (see Solon the reformer and poet). Ancient authors such as Herodotus and Plutarch are the main source of information, yet they wrote about Solon long after his death, at a time when history was by no means an academic discipline. Fourth century orators, such as Aeschines, tended to attribute to Solon all the laws of their own, much later times. Archaeology reveals glimpses of Solon's period in the form of fragmentary inscriptions but little else. For some scholars, our "knowledge" of Solon and his times is largely a fictive construct based on insufficient evidence while others believe a substantial body of real knowledge is still attainable. Solon and his times are interesting to students of history as a test of the limits and nature of historical argument.

  • Name: Solon Age:65 Sex: Male Faction: Greek Cities Appearance: Solon has a kindly, lightly tanned face and hazel eyes. He wears his greying hair short and does not sport any facial hair. There is nothing significant about his height or his build. Personality: Solon is kind, polite and homely. He does not do violence or resort to shouting unnecessarily. He is fantastically intelligent and can articulate what he thinks very well. He has written books and most of his time is spent teaching the most intelligent boys in Athens. Despite his kind appearance he is a brilliant public speaker, this and his ability to read peoples body language made him a superb politician in his younger days. Occupation: Teacher, writer, philosopher, hirtorian Weapons: A pen, his tongue and the ability to read you like a book is all the weapons he needs. Armour: he who sheds no blood needs no armour Clothing: Solon usually wears a loose plan tunic and sandals, as all Greeks do. History: born in the year 380 BC to a prosperous family and schooled by Plato himself in the Academy in Athens. However he did not agree with all of Plato’s teaching and has since developed his own chain of thought, closer to that of Socrates or Aristotle. Solon was a prominent political figure in Athens in the build up to, and during, Alexander’s conquest, he had proposed that Athens stand up against Alexander and quit the Hellenic League, but with the brutal punishment of Thebes he decided to save Athens from he same fate and changed his stance on the matter. Solon did not continue in politics long after the Great Kings death, when he was 50 years old he quit politics and has spent the last 15 years of his life teaching at the Academy and sometimes giving private lessons to people in his quiet home on a hillside overlooking Athens. He is in fact remarkably wealthy; he was very prosperous as a politician and teaching has also brought in revenue. However he does not show off the fact that he is wealthy and he likes to lead a quiet, simple life. However with the recent unrest the Solon was stured from his complacency and is now once more at the forefont of world events. Filfilling his role as a historian he has travelled to egypt to find a cure for the plgue that is spreading over the mediteranian.
