He played 22 games for the New England Whalers in 1976-77, scoring 5 goals and 4 assists. Hynes was demoted to the Rhode Island Reds in mid-season. At the end of the season he played for the United States at the 1977 World Championship. Hynes retired in 1978 after playing a year for the Springfield Indians.
