abstract
  • Sir Edward White (1847 -14 June 1914) was a local politician in London. He first entered the London County Council in 1895 when he was elected to represent West Marylebone as a member of the opposition Moderate Party, which was allied to the parliamentary Conservative and Unionist parties. From 1904 to 1910 he was an alderman, and from 1910 until his death was once more a councillor for West Marylebone. In 1906 the Moderates were reorganised to become the Municipal Reform Party, taking control of the county council from the Liberal-backed Progressive Party in the following year. In 1908 White became chairman of the council's general purposes committee, and carried out the dismantling of the works department, a move which was bitterly opposed by the Progressives. He served as the council's vice chairman in 1909-1910. He held the chairmanship in 1911-1912, in spite of the objections of the Progressives, who initially objected to his appointment and later accused him of violating the council's standing orders. The latter stages of his chairmanship were uncontroversial, and three days before the ending of his term of office in March 1912 he was knighted on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of County Hall by King George V. In 1913 he became chairman of the council's Highway Committee. He died at his home in Upper Berkeley Street in June 1914, and was buried in the Marylebone Cemetery, Finchley.
