  • The Variable Altitude Ordnance Platform, or VAOP, also known as simply the gunship bomber, was a gunship employed by the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. It was also nicknamed the vop by the clones of the army. It was similar to the Low Altitude Assault Transport, another product by Rothana Heavy Engineering, and had several sub-classes. These were the VAOP/proton torpedo, the VAOP/concussion missile, and the VAOP/electromagnetic pulse rocket. After the war, VAOPs entered Imperial service, but were mostly replaced by TIE bombers and Skipray Blastboats.

abstract
  • The Variable Altitude Ordnance Platform, or VAOP, also known as simply the gunship bomber, was a gunship employed by the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. It was also nicknamed the vop by the clones of the army. It was similar to the Low Altitude Assault Transport, another product by Rothana Heavy Engineering, and had several sub-classes. These were the VAOP/proton torpedo, the VAOP/concussion missile, and the VAOP/electromagnetic pulse rocket. The VAOP had four projectile tubes in its payload bay. The projectile tubes angled downward slightly, however the projectiles could lock onto higher targets, although with less accuracy. The ordnance bays and launchers were modular and a gunship bomber could quite easily be changed from one ammunition designation to another. Variable Altitude Ordnance Platforms were not as famous as the versatile LAAT, yet did serve an important role in the war as a midpoint between the LAAT and the PTB-625 bomber and a counterpart to the Separatists' Heavy Missile Platform. A VAOP rescued High General Mace Windu on Ruul and evacuated survivors in the infamous Battle of Leziquk. After the war, VAOPs entered Imperial service, but were mostly replaced by TIE bombers and Skipray Blastboats.
