The Springfield Indians held his pro rights. They traded him to the Montreal Canadiens in 1948. McNabney played from 1949 to 1952 with the Canadiens' farm team Buffalo Bisons and saw his five games in the NHL in 1950-51. In 1952-53 he played for the Syracuse Warriors and retired. McNabney died at the age of 28 due to cancer.
