abstract
  • The mission of the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) is to determine rapidly the location and size of all destructive earthquakes worldwide and immediately to disseminate this information to concerned national and international agencies, scientists, and the general public. The NEIC/WDS for Seismology compiles and maintains an extensive, global seismic database on earthquake parameters and their effects that serves as a solid foundation for basic and applied earth science research. "The main products of the NIEC include real-time monitoring (which is used mostly by researchers), estimates of the magnitude of ground shaking that are based on seismic monitor readings and damage reports, and rapid estimates of fatalities and economic damage on a green-yellow-orange-red scale."
