  • In 1983, the Internet Configuration Control Board (ICCB) was reorganized around a series of technical task forces and renamed the Internet Activities Board (IAB). The IAB was supported throughout the 1980s by the Federal Research Internet Coordinating Committee (FRICC), an informal group of U.S. Government managers supporting internetworking that was absorbed into the Federal Networking Council in 1990. In June, 1992, the Internet Activities Board was renamed the Internet Architecture Board by the Internet Society at the INET92 conference in Kobe, Japan. The IAB has reorganized several times. It now has two primary components: the Internet Engineering Task Force and the Internet Research Task Force. Two other functions are critical to IAB operation: publication of documents describing the Internet and the assignment and recording of various identifiers needed for protocol operation.
