abstract | - The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season was an unprecedented hurricane season, shattering numerous records. The single most active Atlantic hurricane season, the impact was widespread and destructive, with over $200 billion dollars in property damage to the United States, Caribbean Islands, Canada, and Mexico, with most of the destruction being caused by Arlene, Cindy, Harvey, Nate, Rina, Sean, and Delta. The United States was struck by five major hurricanes, three of which made landfall in Florida. The most catastrophic effects of the season were felt in southern Florida by Hurricane Cindy and Nate, both of which combined caused nearly $126 billion dollars in property damage. Hurricane Rina in late-September brought severe damage to Maryland and Delaware, resulting in an additional $49 billion dollars in property damage. The deadliest hurricane of the season, Eta, was also the first ever major hurricane recorded in the month of December. The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1st, however Hurricane Arlene, which developed several weeks prior to the start of the hurricane season, marked the unofficial start of the season. A record breaking 30 named storms developed in the 2017 season, breaking the previous record of 28 held by the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. In addition, 2017 had an incredible 18 hurricanes develop in the season, 13 of which became major hurricanes. A record breaking 8 Category 4 hurricanes developed in 2017, three of which -- Harvey, Rina, and Delta -- became Category 5 hurricanes. The season also saw the return of the Greek alphabet, with Delta -- the strongest storm of the season -- forming becoming the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the month of November, and with Iota in late-December causing an unprecedented snow storm in the state of Florida.
