- The Talath Dirnen (Guarded Plain) was a plateau between the rivers Narog and Sirion in the realm of Nargothrond in West Beleriand during the First Age of Middle-earth. An empty plain, it was bordered to the west by the River Narog, and in the east by Sirion. Amon Rûdh lay to the east as well, and many miles to the north were the Pools of Ivrin in Eithel Ivrin. Southeast of the Talath Dirnen lay the Doors of Nargothrond; and beyond rose the Taur-en-Faroth, the Forest of the Hunters above the banks of Narog.

- Talath Dirnen (Sindarin: Bewachte Ebene) war eine bewaldete Ebene des Nargothrond-Reiches. Sie lag zwischen den Flüssen Narog und Teiglin. Talath Dirnen wurde von Waldläufern bewacht und bewehrt mit verborgenen Türmen. Nach dem Fall von Tol Sirion im Jahr 457 E.Z. war die Ebene offen für Morgoths Ork-Armeen. Mit großer Wachsamkeit beschützten die Haladin von Brethil, ihre Bwohner und Túrin Turambar und Beleg das Gebiet. Nachdem Túrin am Amon Rûdh gefangengenommen wurde, begannen die Orks Talath Dirnen heimzusuchen. Orodreth von Nargothrond fürchtete, die Aufmerksamkeit Morgoths auf die Stadt zu ziehen und beantwortete diese Ork-Angriffe nur sehr zurückhaltend, mit Hinterhalten und kleineren Scharmützeln. Túrin Turambar überredete schließlich das Volk von Nargothrond, Morgoth aktiv entgegenzutreten. Eine Zeit lang war Talath Dirnen dann auch frei von Orks. Morgoth hingegen blieb nicht untätig. Er baute, natürlich Geheim, eine große Streitmacht auf und entsandte sie 495 E.Z., unter Glaurungs Führung gegen Nargothrond. Túrin und Orodreth stellten sich mit ihrem Heer in einer offenen Feldschalcht dem Feind entgegen und wurden bei Tumhalad vernichtend geschlagen. Die genaue Ausdehnung der Ebene ist nicht gesichert. Im Norden scheint es das ganz Land bis zu den Teiglin-Stegen umfaßt zu haben. Im Süden erstreckte sich die Ebene möglicherweise bis zum Andram und im Osten schloss es vermutlich das Gebiet um den Amon Rûdh zwischen Nivrim und Teiglin mit ein.

Reaching north and east of Nargothrond, chief city of the Kingdom of Finrod Felagund, the plain was a major buffer between Felagund's land and the threat of Morgoth in his far northern fortress of Angband. The Silmarillion says of the Talath Dirnen: "Upon that plain the Elves of Nargothrond kept unceasing watch; and every hill upon its borders was crowned with hidden towers, and through all its woods and fields archers ranged secretly and with great craft. Their arrows were sure and deadly, and nothing crept there against their will" —The Silmarillion, page 166 The landscape of the Talath Dirnen was said to be rolling and mostly open. A few patches of forest provided cover for Felagund's rangers, including at the feet of Amon Ethir, the Hill of Spies. The greatest of Talath Dirnen's watchtowers, it was so named for the rangers that guarded it, whose keen elvish sight could descry any approaching enemy.
