  • The Schemers were the winners of the 1982 WBRU Radio Rock Hunt in Providence, R.I., and then the 1984 WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble, in Boston, MA. Their hit single, "Remember," was the number 1 song on WBRU for over 10 weeks in early 1982. They had a sound that was a cross between a punk Elvis Costello and a dissatisfied Tom Petty ("I've had enough of these plain-Jane girls/ I think it's time I went downtown," sang lead singer Mark Cutler in "High Fashion Girl") and then on the nostalgic "Remember" ("I know I'm going somewhere/ maybe in the ground, maybe nowhere"). The Schemers never gained the national popularity of such other Providence bands like The Throwing Muses, Belly, The Talking Heads, or John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.

The Schemers only CD was released in 2004. "Remember[1]" featured the hit singles "High Fashion Girl," "I Want Some Fun" and the haunting "Remember" MP3: [2] Band members included: Jimmy Berger, Rene Blais, Emerson Torrey, and lead singer and song writer Mark Cutler. Emerson Torrey and Mark Cutler later founded the nationally recognized rock band The Raindogs who recorded on Atlantic Record label, Atco Records, with former Red Rockers rhythm section Darren Hill and Jim Reilly (of Ireland’s Stiff Little Fingers), and Celtic fiddle king Johnny Cunningham, formerly of Silly Wizard. The Raindogs toured with both Warren Zevon and Don Henley and then later on with Bob Dylan.
