In 1938, Carroll and Weinberg were participating in the Republican offensive along the Ebro when they learned that Germany had invaded Czechoslovakia, launching a larger global war. Carroll and Weinberg remained close, usually being deployed to the same locations. They were sent to Madrid in 1939 after it was clear that the Ebro line was stable. He participated in the successful defense of the city against the Nationalist attack. He remained in Madrid, participating in the glacial Republican advance. Carroll received an injury to his calf in 1943. Ironically, he was killed just minutes after returning to the line later that year, when he sustained injuries from a Nationalist shell.
