The terminally ill Sonny, before making a last confession asked to speak to the police about a boxing match he'd refereed in 1976 in which boxer Jerry Stone was killed. When Lieutenant John Stillman and Detective Lilly Rush arrived, Father Gomez explained what Sonny had told them. Sonny confessed to being paid $1,500 to keep the fight going, despite Jerry's injuries, but was unable to say who had paid him off. Sonny's final words were asking Father Gomez, "do you think he'll forgive...?"
