When Ryan ran away from home in January 2008 after finding out that Michelle was not his biological mother, Michelle and her boyfriend Steve McDonald found him in Roy's Rolls with Phil. Ryan was arguing with Roy Cropper because there was no disabled toilet and Phil was in a wheelchair. Michelle called round at Phil's house in Oakhill a few days later to see if Ryan had gone there after he ran away again, however, he hadn't. Later in 2009, Ryan and Phil formed a band. They performed at the Christian centre in March and in May, they needed transport to get to a concert. Luke Strong, who fancied Michelle, offered to drive them there in an Underworld van. Phil was played by Richard Sargent, a real life wheelchair user.
