ShortSummary
  • The gang discovers that there have been strange disappearances in a spooky town. The old innkeeper, Hama, is secretly a Waterbender from the Southern Tribe, and the group stays with her for a while. Hama teaches Katara some of the Southern Water Tribe's past and some special Waterbending techniques. Katara discovers Hama has been causing the disappearances by kidnapping civilians with a technique called "Bloodbending". The resulting battle forces Katara to fight Hama and save the others from her grasp. Katara is forced to use Bloodbending in the battle, which leaves her emotionally scarred.
  • Sokka and Zuko travel on their hot air balloon to the Boiling Rock, the maximum security prison of the Fire Nation, in hopes of saving Sokka's father, Hakoda, who was captured in the failed invasion. After discovering Suki, they learn that there are no Water Tribe prisoners in there, Sokka, Zuko, and Suki plan to escape in the "Coolers". Another Fire Nation prisoner named Chit Sang escapes with them. Sokka, Zuko, and Suki then stay behind to rescue Hakoda, while Chit Sang and his prisoner friends escape in the Cooler. But the escape fails and Chit Sang is returned to the prison.
  • Sokka feels left out when he is the only person who is unable to help stop a forest fire caused by a fallen meteorite from a meteor shower. Sokka finds the sword master Piandao, who trains him to use a sword made out of a meteorite. After Sokka masters his training, Master Piandao gives him a White Lotus Pai Sho Piece, which is used by the members of the Order of the White Lotus. Meanwhile, Iroh devises a plan to escape the prison and starts bodybuilding in secret.
  • Seeking redemption, Zuko follows Aang and his friends to the Western Air Temple. There, Zuko desperately tries to prove to them that he has changed for the better. It is only after Zuko helps save the group from "Combustion Man" that he receives the group's acceptance. However, Katara does not trust Zuko, and warns him of the consequences of any treachery.
  • While on the island, Aang seeks guidance from his past lives, but is not pleased with what he is told. The island, in fact, turns out to be a lion turtle from whom Aang is given the guidance he had been seeking. After the tracker is unable to find Aang, the rest of the group decide they must find Iroh. When they find Iroh, the group meets the Order of the White Lotus, an order which transcends the division of the four nations. After a discussion with Iroh, the team decides to split up; Sokka, Suki, and Toph head to stop the Fire Nation's air fleet, the Order goes to reclaim Ba Sing Se for the Earth Kingdom, and Katara, Zuko, and Appa head to defeat Azula.
  • During the battle, Ozai manages to slam Aang into a sharp rock, which stabs Aang's scar. Aang releases the seventh chakra and enters the "Avatar state". Though Aang easily overwhelms Ozai, he refuses to kill him. Aang instead uses Energybending to strip Ozai of his Firebending powers. The Order of the White Lotus manage to liberate Ba Sing Se, and Katara manages to defeat Azula and heal Zuko. During his coronation, Fire Lord Zuko promises to aid the world in reconstruction.
  • After Chit Sang's failed escape, Zuko too is imprisoned. Sokka goes in his father's cell to see Hakoda, and the three create another plan to escape the Boiling Rock. The prison warden attempts to force Chit Sang to tell him the creator of his escape plan, but Chit Sang lies to the warden about who it truly is. Meanwhile, Sokka, Zuko, Suki, and Hakoda decide to start a riot to cover their escape and kidnap the warden to do so. Zuko's sister, Azula, and her two friends Mai and Ty Lee, come to the prison and try to capture the group. Mai and Ty Lee betray Azula and help the group escape, so Azula imprisons both of her friends.
  • Zuko confronts Katara about her distrustful disposition toward him and finds out that Katara is taking her anger about her mother's death out on him. He then decides to help Katara find the Fire Nation soldier responsible for killing her mother. They find out that her mother said she was the last Waterbender to protect the real last Waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe: her daughter Katara. Katara finds herself unable to kill the man when she finally confronts him. After returning, Aang is proud of her for not seeking her revenge, and Katara finally forgives Zuko of his past betrayal in the Ba Sing Se catacombs.
  • Aang sees a Fire Nation village on a polluted river, and the gang heads to it for food. Seeing the starving and ill people, Katara wishes to help them, against the objections of Sokka and the rest, who wish to continue forward. Katara feeds Appa berries to make it seem like Appa is sick, and the group is forced to stay near the town. Over the next few days a mysterious spirit appears, heals the sick of the town, and leaves food. Aang discovers that it is Katara who has been acting as the spirit, and he helps her to destroy the water-polluting factory. After scaring off the angered soldiers the next day, they help clean up the river.
  • Aang awakes to find himself crippled onboard a stolen Fire Nation ship with the group, Bato, and Hakoda. Aang is shocked to discover that following his injury in the second season finale in Ba Sing Se, the world believes him to be dead. After a great deal of persuasion, Aang agrees to keep his existence a secret. Zuko and Azula sail home in peace, but Zuko secretly fears being rejected by his father, Fire Lord Ozai.
  • When Aang reveals his decision to wait until after the comet passes to confront Ozai, Zuko explains the Fire Lord's plan to use the power of Sozin′s Comet to destroy all of the Earth Kingdom; forcing Aang to attack the Fire Lord before the comet's arrival. During the night, Aang is drawn towards an island, prompting the group to find a tracker as an attempt to locate him. The Fire Lord crowns himself Phoenix King and Aang awakens on an island not knowing where he is.
  • Zuko's Firebending powers weaken substantially, so he and Aang travel to the temples of the Sun Warriors to learn about the origin of Firebending. After discovering that the Sun Warriors still exist, Zuko and Aang are sent to confront original Firebenders, two dragons, to seek the origin of Firebending. After performing a Firebending dance they learned earlier in the episode, Zuko and Aang are taught the real art of Firebending by the Firebending masters.
  • On the day of the solar eclipse, the invasion begins. Hakoda returns with several people whom the group has met during their adventures, including Haru, Teo, The Duke and Pipsqueak, the Foggy Swamp Tribe, the Boulder and Hippo. The Mechanist created several of Sokka's designs, including submarines, which are used to sneak into the Fire Nation capital. The invasion force breaks through many security barriers, including the Gates of Azulon.
  • Zuko, Azula, Mai and Ty Lee go on vacation to Ember Island and learn more about each other. Meanwhile, Aang and the rest of his team are being chased by an assassin hired by Zuko, who has a unique ability to Firebend from his mind's eye. The group manages to escape, but the assassin follows.
  • Sokka and Toph attempt to help Aang find the Fire Lord in time for the eclipse, but Azula stalls them and the eclipse passes before they can find him. Meanwhile, Zuko confronts his father and vows to help Aang defeat him, causing Ozai to attempt to kill his son. In the meantime, Iroh escapes from jail. The invasion force is forced to retreat, but when the submarines are destroyed, Aang and the younger children are forced to abandon the warriors, who are captured by the Fire Nation.
  • Katara expresses her disapproval when Toph begins defrauding Fire Nation civilians for quick cash. Toph thinks Katara is acting too motherly, and a rift forms within the group. Katara decides to perform a scam with Toph to patch things up, but they are captured by local authorities. Combustion Man, the assassin from the previous episode, uses the two as bait in an attempt to kill Aang.
  • Aang is told in a dream to go to Avatar Roku's birthplace and Zuko receives a mysterious message about his great-grandfather's past. Aang and Zuko learn about Sozin and Roku's childhood friendship, their falling out, and Sozin's betrayal of Roku. Zuko learns that Sozin and Roku are his paternal and maternal great-grandfathers.
  • The group arrives at the rendezvous point for an invasion four days ahead of schedule, but Aang begins to feel nervous about confronting the Fire Lord. Feeling that he is unprepared, he trains constantly, causing him to hallucinate and have nightmares. The group tries to help him relax in their own ways, but he soon stops sleeping entirely. It takes the collaboration of Sokka, Toph, and Katara to get him to relax and finally sleep well. When Zuko is not told of a War Meeting, he grows angry and distrustful of his father.
  • Aang and the group steal Fire Nation clothes as temporary disguises. Aang accidentally takes a school uniform and is taken to a Fire Nation school, where he gets into a fight and arranges a school-wide dance party in the cave the group is staying in. Meanwhile, Zuko believes that Aang did not really die in Ba Sing Se and goes to Iroh's prison to ask for his advice. He then hires an assassin to find and kill Aang.
  • Sokka discovers that the Ember Island Players, a Fire Nation theater group, is debuting a comedy based upon the group's adventures. After deciding to see the play, everyone is furious at their portrayals except Toph, who is played by a muscular actor. The ending of the play, a comedic version of the upcoming battle between Ozai and the Avatar in which Ozai kills the Avatar, frightens Aang.
  • Zuko and Katara confront Azula, but she challenges Zuko to a one-on-one Agni Kai. Zuko is wounded by a blast of lightning while protecting Katara. Meanwhile, Aang finally confronts Ozai but finds himself overwhelmed by Ozai's comet-enhanced Firebending. Sokka, Toph, and Suki attempt to halt the fleet but are soon separated, while the Order of the White Lotus battles for Ba Sing Se.
