Drafted 68th overall by the Nordiques in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, Karpa went on to play 557 regular season games in the NHL, scoring 18 goals and 80 assists for 98 points and collecting 1374 penalty minutes. He played junior hockey for the Notre Dame College Hounds and then joined Ferris State for two years. Turning pro with the Nordiques at the end of the 1991-92 season, he spent most of the next three years in the minors. A trade to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1995 gave him the opportunity to be an NHL regular. He was that over seven seasons with the Ducks, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the New York Rangers. In 2002-03 he was sent down to the Hartford Wolf Pack. Karpa spent the last three years of his career in the minors, including 12 games with the Amur Khabarovsk team in Russia in 2003-04.
