The Rebel pilots noticed the approaching starfighters, and began preparations to jump to hyperspace. The TIEs got into range and fired on the X-wings, starting a short dogfight in which one TIE and one X-wing were destroyed. At one point, Commander Ree had to put herself in front of Commander Nash Windrider in order to fulfill her orders. They were both congratulated by Piett, as the dogfight allowed the Rebels to be drawn into a trap soon after at Endor.
