  • 2nd Lt. Therrel Shane Childers of the United States Marine Corps was one of the first members of the United States Military to die since the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Childers grew up in a military family mostly in Harrison County, Miss. His father was a Navy Seabee, after visiting the US Embassy in Tehran his father recalls: "He saw those Marines in their dress blues guarding the embassy, and he wanted to be one himself". He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California. He was killed while leading his platoon toward an oil-pumping station in southern Iraq.
