Synopsis
  • Black Adam is reunited with his wife Isis. However, there is something wrong. The Lazarus Pit has not restored her to full health. Before his very eyes, Adam's wife begins to loose cohesion as the skin and muscle tissue dries up and withers away from her body. Meanwhile, the JSA conduct a study of the mystical lightning bolt that transforms Freddy Freeman into Captain Marvel. Freddy stands in the middle of the Mojave Desert, while Mister Terrific, Atom-Smasher and Wildcat monitor him from their New York Headquarters. Freddy speaks the magic word "Shazam" and Mister Terrific attempts to track the lightning's path. He decides that he would like to try another test to see if the magnetic poles play a part in the lightning bolt's course. Back in the Himalayas, Black Adam places Isis' remains in his satchel and begins the long trek down the mountainside. A Yeti emerges and attacks him, forcing Black Adam to drop his pack. Using his knife, Adam slices open the Yeti's stomach and grabs a hold of his intestines. He uses the beast's innards to rappel down the slope of the mountain to retrieve Isis' bones. Once he reaches the lower ledge, he severs his intestinal bungee cord and continues on his way. At the Batcave, Batman and Superman monitor strange activity taking place at the Kahndaqi embassy. Batman zeroes in on the image of an M-107 sniper rifle adjacent to the embassy, and Superman flies off to intercept. He arrives on the rooftop and apprehends a man dressed in black aiming his weapon towards the embassy. The man tries to fire his handgun at Superman, but the bullets bounce off him. Superman uses his heat vision to melt the ricocheting slugs before they can strike innocent bystanders. Superman's efforts to interrogate the sniper fail, so he brings him back to the Batcave, where Batman interrogates him at length. Time passes, and Black Adam arrives in the United States. He goes to Salem, Massachusetts and uses a shard of the Rock of Eternity to show him the path to the Tower of Fate. Entering the Tower, he calls out for Doctor Fate, but the only living being he finds is Felix Faust. Felix has been trapped in the tower ever since the late Ralph Dibny constructed a binding circle used to imprison Faust and the demon Neron. Neron however, has since found away to escape the circle. Black Adam pins Faust to the wall with a sword and asks him where to find the Amulet of Isis. The amulet is the only item that might restore his beloved to full health. Faust does not have the amulet, but tells Adam that he may be able to use his magic to restore his powers. He finds a way to counteract the spell that Billy Batson created which prevented Black Adam from using the magic word Shazam. Now, Adam's power is tied to the residual mystic energy given off by Isis' body. Felix warns him that borrowing power from Isis will cause her body to degrade even further. Adam speaks his wife's name and his costume and powers are restored. Standing before Faust he says, "And so it begins".

quotation
  • I can still feel the vile breath of Pestilence across my face as he and the other Horsemen destroyed our home -- our lives -- in Kahndaq. I remember dying.
