  • Bollywood is a name given to films made in the Indian region of Mumbai. The name comes from a combination of Bombay, the former name of the region and Hollywood. Sometimes it is used a broad term for any movies made in India, which make more movies than any country in the world.
  • Bollywood is the term for Indian-Hindi language films. Bollywood is one of the largest film producers in the world. Romance and songs are often a part of bollywood films.
  • Bollywood (Hindi: बॉलीवुड, Urdu: بالی وڈ) is the informal term popularly used for Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry in India. Bollywood is one of the largest film producers in the world Unlike Hollywood, Bollywood does not exist as a real physical place. Though some deplore the name, arguing that it makes the industry look like a poor cousin to Hollywood, it seems likely to persist and now has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary.
  • Bollywood was a film-making community on Earth, roughly equivalent to Hollywood, but for Indian film. When Fitz suggested Anji Kapoor sit in a foldaway canvas chair for "that authentic Hollywood touch" at the premiere of a movie they'd made together on her Mac, she corrected him with the word, "Bollywood". She was somewhat surprised at her own pedantry, given that she'd spent most of her life running away from her cultural heritage. However, since the TARDIS was then adrift between realities, she was clinging to anything "real" from her own version of Earth. (PROSE: Timeless)
  • Bollywood is India's Hollywood. How original! But then, it's only expected, since most Bollywood movies are remakes of Hollywood movies. So a tip of the hat to the guy who came up with that name, for being faithful to tradition, and a collective wag of the finger to all of Bollywood for being copycats. It is a well known fact that Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA knows more about Bollywood then most Indians: "Congratulations Mr. Khan. You are truly the Dilip Kumar to Amitabh's Raj Kapur".
  • This is the informal name for the vast Hindi-language film industry (one of the world's largest film industries) in the world's largest democracy (India, for those of you playing along at home). The name is a portmanteau of "Bombay" (the former name of Mumbai, where it is based) and "Hollywood" created by white people, notably a Variety journalist. There are also non-Hindi film industries based on other Indian languages such as Telugu ("Tollywood") and Tamil ("Kollywood"). Although these industries are huge, they don't receive much press and are not well known outside of India.

Though some deplore the name, arguing that it makes the industry look like a poor cousin to Hollywood, it seems likely to persist and now has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary. Bollywood is commonly referred to as Hindi cinema, even though Hindustani, understood as the colloquial base common to both Hindi and Urdu, might be more accurate. The use of poetic Urdu words is fairly common. There has been a growing presence of Indian English in dialogue and songs as well. It is not uncommon to see films that feature dialogue with English words and phrases, even whole sentences. There is a growing number of films made entirely in English.

(PROSE: Timeless) The name "Bollywood" carried forward into humans' colonisation of space. The planet BollyWorld was named after Bollywood. (PROSE: Peacemaker) The Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond once visited a planet which seemed to have been influenced by Bollywood culture (or, alternatively, was the source of Bollywood culture). (COMIC: Planet Bollywood)

So a tip of the hat to the guy who came up with that name, for being faithful to tradition, and a collective wag of the finger to all of Bollywood for being copycats. However, the similarities stop there. While Hollywood is full of Liberals and Jews, Bollywood is over-run with Conservatives. Hollywood actively promotes its pro-gay agenda and attempts to make flaming homosexuals out of all of us. On the other hand, if two guys even look at each other funny in a Bollywood movie, the Hindu conservative activists burn down every cinema in Mumbai. It is a well known fact that Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA knows more about Bollywood then most Indians: "Congratulations Mr. Khan. You are truly the Dilip Kumar to Amitabh's Raj Kapur". On that note, it should also be pointed out that Dr. Colbert is the only American who takes the effort to properly pronounce Indian names. He should give himself a tip of his own hat for that.

The average Hindi movie is three hours long (some are much longer) because most of them draw inspiration from old-school Hollywood epics as well as the narrative epics of Hinduism. Many movies will incorporate themes from India's major religions (such as Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Sikhism) as well as values common to Indian society to illustrate how they might clash with individualism or Western values. Many of the Hindi films are a form of escapist entertainment. * Useful Notes On India * Bollywood Movies * Bollywood Actors Not to be confused with Bollywood Nerd, although both come from India.
