It had not been used until Martin the Warrior, Gonff the Mousethief, and Young Dinny the mole met Big Club on their way to Salamandastron. Because he now had a crew, Big Club decided to set sail in Waterwing and attempt to navigate himself and the three travelers beneath the mountains down towards Salamandastron. Unfortunately Waterwing was destroyed after going over a waterfall near Bat Mountpit. Most of the ship's wood went into building a door over one of Bat Mountpit's exits so that the bats would be safe from large birds of prey that might roost high on that side of the mountain. One such bird, a fierce tawny owl, was driven off by a rock slide made by Dinny's tunneling skills.
