Peters Township High School junior Hardy Kern has been unanimously appointed to serve a five-year term on the Environmental Quality Board. The board helps develop policies on environmental issues. Township Manager Michael Silvestri said the municipalities' charter does not bar a teenager from serving. Kern is the youngest person to ever serve on a township board.

Kern is a volunteer at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium and an activist for several wildlife organizations dedicated to saving endangered animals. Peters Township is a community about 20 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.
