Lessard made the Kings in 1978-79 and immediately became one of the top goalies in the NHL. In 1980-81 he made the second team all-star team in 1980-81 and played in the All-Star Game. He was also named to Canada's team in the 1981 Canada Cup. After this season his game entered a steep decline. He became a part-timer and spent time in the minors. Lessard retired in 1984.
