  • Statistics are very important to baseball, perhaps more than any other sport. The practice of keeping records of the achievements of the players was started in the 19th century by Henry Chadwick, who devised the predecessors of statistics like batting average, runs scored, and runs allowed based on his experience of cricket. Statistics have been kept for the Major Leagues since their creation. A fine history of baseball statistics appears in the various editions of "Total Baseball" and the "ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia," both of which are primarily edited by Pete Palmer.

  • Statistics are a representation of a character's physical and mental abilities, measured in eight categories. Players can increase these statistics through equipped items and talents gained while leveling, but only super stats increase on their own. Each statistic has its own soft cap, which varies with your level, beyond which the stat's effects are subject to diminishing returns. An easy method of finding each soft cap is to check what value is required for your Super Stat(s) to grant a damage bonus of 30% - that value is the soft cap for your level. Any statistic above that value will be affected by diminishing returns. * Prior to the Oct 6, 2009 patch, statistics were limited by a Hard Cap, set to the value required for a Super Stat to grant a damage bonus of 32%.

Lastly, Djinn can be reordered among characters to change classes and in turn raise or lower stats. This is extremely useful for building an adept's luck rating, as their are but few other ways of doing so. At times, it may actually be desirable to lower a stat. This becomes apparent when abusing the Random Number Generator to acquire drop-items from enemies: usually, it will be required that the monster be felled with a specific element of Djinn on a specific turn (most often the second). If a normally speedy character such as Ivan lacks the attack power to fell the monster at the start of that turn, it is suggested to lower his agility rating by way of class change, or agility-reducing equipment such as the Turtle Boots. This way, one can weaken the monster with the other battling adepts and have Ivan finish the monster with the Djinn strike, guaranteed.

Of course, all of these mentioned studies' results were shown to be significant because they were really expensive to perform and used very complicated equipment. See also data manipulation. Statistically speaking, the average probability of all probabilities is "50-50", or "SO-SO", meaning that any given action either will or will not occur. Thus, the only conclusion one can obtain from a statistic is that something will happen, regardless of the question. It is important to note that 40% of all statistics are statistically made up on the spot. The two major branches of statistics are prescriptive statistics and preferential statistics, both offering oonyvariate (85%) and mooltivariate (85%) varieties. Lesser known branches include existential statistics (85%) and transcendental statistics (85%), the first of which you know in your heart is true and the second of which just left the room for a second, had to get a glass of water, so we'll wait for it. Should be back any moment now --- at least, there's an 85% chance of it.

General managers and baseball scouts study player statistics to decide what players to try to get for their team. Managers, catchers and pitchers study statistics of batters on opposing teams to figure out how best to pitch to them and position the players. Managers and batters study opposing pitchers to figure out how best to hit them. Managers often base their personnel decisions during the game on statistics, such as choosing who to put in the lineup, or which relief pitcher to bring in. Traditionally, statistics like batting average for batters (the number of hits divided by the number of at bats) and earned run average (approximately the number of runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings) have governed the statistical world of baseball. However, the advent of sabermetrics brought an onslaught of new statistics that better gauge a player's performance and contributions to his team from year to year. Some sabermetric statistics have entered the mainstream baseball world. Among statistics that measure a batter's overall performance, On-base plus slugging (OPS) is one of the easiest to calculate. It adds the hitter's on base percentage (number of times reached base -by any means- divided by total plate appearances) to his or her slugging percentage (total bases divided by at bats). Some argue that the OPS formula is flawed and that more weight should be shifted towards OBP (on base percentage). Regardless, OPS still stands as the most direct means of evaluating a hitter's performance using readily available statistics. OPS is also useful when determining a pitcher's level of success. 'Opponent On-base Plus Slugging' (OOPS) is becoming a popular way to evaluating a pitcher's actual performance. When analyzing a pitcher's statistics, some useful categories to consider are: K/9 (strikeouts per nine innings), K/BB (strikeouts per walk), and HR/9. WHIP (walks+hits per inning pitched) and OOPS (opponent on-base plus slugging) are popular statistics; however, if DIPS theory is correct, a pitcher has little control over these statistics. When viewing all these categories together, you gain a much clearer picture of the pitcher's success level (as opposed to simply considering W-L and ERA). Though not widely used, statistics like FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) can be used as a predictor of a pitcher's "true" success, with the impact of his fielders removed. Since 2001, more emphasis has been placed on Defense-Independent Pitching Statistics. These statistics, such as Defense-Independent ERA (dERA), attempt to evaluate a pitcher solely according to those events governed solely by the pitcher's performance, regardless of the strength of the defensive players behind him. Also important are all of those statistics in certain in-game situations. For example, a certain hitter's ability to hit left-handed pitchers might cause his manager to give him more chances to face lefties. Other hitters may have a history of success against a given pitcher (or vice versa), and the manager may use this information to engineer a favourable matchup. Comprehensive, historical baseball statistics were difficult for the average fan to access until 1951, when researchers S.C. Thompson and Hy Turkin published "The Complete Encyclopedia of Baseball", the first modern baseball encyclopedia. In 1969, MacMillan Publishing printed its first Baseball Encyclopedia, using a computer to compile stats for the first time. "Big Mac" became the standard baseball reference until 1988, when Total Baseball was released by Warner Books, using even more sophisticated technology. (This led to discovery, and expulsion, of several players who didn't belong in the record books -- "phantom ballplayers", like Lou Proctor and Al Olsen (1921-1994), who because of a scorer's error, was erroneously listed for more than 35 years as having 1 pinch hit plate appearance for the 1943 Red Sox.

  • Statistics is a broad mathematical discipline which studies ways to collect, summarize, and draw conclusions from data. It is applicable to a wide variety of academic fields from the physical and social sciences to the humanities, as well as to business, government and industry. Once data is collected, either through a formal sampling procedure or some other, less formal method of observation, graphical and numerical summaries may be obtained using the techniques of descriptive statistics. The specific summary methods chosen depend on the method of data collection. The techniques of descriptive statistics can also be applied to census data, which is collected on entire populations. If the data can be viewed as a sample (a subset of some population of interest), inferential statistics can be used to draw conclusions about the larger, mostly unobserved population. These inferences, which are usually based on ideas of randomness and uncertainty quantified through the use of probabilities, may take any of several forms: 1. * Answers to essentially yes/no questions (hypothesis testing) 2. * Estimates of numerical characteristics (estimation) 3. * Predictions of future observations (prediction) 4. * Descriptions of association (correlation) 5. * Modeling of relationships (regression) The procedures by which such inferences are made are sometimes collectively known as applied statistics. In contrast, statistical theory (or, as an academic subject sometimes called mathematical statistics) is the subdiscipline of applied mathematics which uses probability theory and mathematical analysis to place statistical practice on a firm theoretical basis. (If applied statistics is what you do in statistics, statistical theory tells you why it works.) In academic statistics courses, the word statistic (no final s) is usually defined as a numerical quantity calculated from a set of data. In this usage, statistics would be the plural form meaning a collection of such numerical quantities. See Statistic for further discussion. Less formally, the word statistics (singluar statistic) is often used in a way roughly synonymous with data or simply numbers, a common example being sports "statistics" published in newspapers. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics collects data on employment and general economic conditions; also, the Census Bureau publishes a large annual volume called the Statistical Abstract of the United States based on census data.

(VOY: "One Small Step") In 2151, T'Pol reminded Jonathan Archer that "only one out of every forty three thousand planets supports intelligent life". Archer replied by saying that he had studied exobiology and was aware of the statistics. (ENT: "Fight or Flight") Also that year, when Archer asked T'Pol what she knew about the planet Coridan, she replied with its population. Archer told her that he wasn't asking for statistics, but rather cultural information on such topics as food and recreation. When T'Pol told him that the Vulcan database didn't have that kind of information in it, the captain replied, "Of course not." (ENT: "Shadows of P'Jem") In a deleted scene from "Similitude" , Sim mentioned to T'Pol that both Humans and Vulcans had both managed to to extend their average life spans from 35 and 40, respectively, noting that both species actively try to change the statistic. In 2269, Spock agreed with Em/3/Green's assertion that the team of specialists would all die on the "mad planet", calling it "a statistical probability." When Lara heard this, she asked him if he ever quoted anything other than statistics. Spock replied that he did, but philosophy and poetry were inappropriate given their circumstances. (TAS: "The Jihad") In 2365, Jean-Luc Picard defended William T. Riker's command style to a critical Sirna Kolrami. While the Zakdorn believed that Riker's good humor was inappropriate for a commanding officer, Picard believed that he earned loyalty by that means. He then offered to "match his command style with your (Kolrami's) statistics any time." (TNG: "Peak Performance" ) In 2366, Paul Stubbs explained to Wesley Crusher that he was able to use his extensive knowledge of baseball stats to play entire seasons of the game in his mind. (TNG: "Evolution" ) Also that year, in an alternate timeline, Natasha Yar asked Lieutenant junior grade Castillo to give her the stats on the USS Enterprise-C's phaser banks. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise" ) In 2370, Picard recalled looking through the personnel files of around 50 different candidates for his first officer. At first glance, Riker's was similar to the others, "filled with lots of dry statistics and glowing letters of recommendation that tell you nothing". (TNG: "The Pegasus" ) In 2374, Benjamin Sisko dismissed Dr. Julian Bashir's conclusion (reached along with Lauren, Patrick, Jack and Sarina Douglas) that surrender to the Dominion was the best option, saying his rationale was entirely "based on a series of statistical probabilities and assumptions". (DS9: "Statistical Probabilities") In 2377, The Doctor posited that if the Allocator's treatment coefficient ratings were purely a function of statistics, he and Voje could ensure a so-called less important individual with a lower rating received better care by inputting spurious data to raise the individual's rating. (VOY: "Critical Care") Also that year, Neelix determined from statistics that Benkarans usually received harsher sentences for their crimes under the Nygean legal system. When he told this to Joleg, the Benkaran replied that statistics wouldn't save him. (VOY: "Repentance")
