Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis) is a star in the Orion constellation (the hunter). Despite its designation, it is not the brightest star in Orion; that honor falls to Rigel (Beta Orionis). Betelgeuse is a star of the spectral type M1 (red), and is a red supergiant. It is one of 3 stars that forms the Winter Triangle (Sirius, Procyon) and is one of the brightest winter nighttime stars. It is one of the largest stars known. If it were in the Sol solar system, its surface would be located at Jupiter's orbit (in other words, it's a very big star). It is located 427 ly from Sol. Betelgeuse is a corrupt translation of the Arabic yad al-jawza, meaning "hand of the central one". Renaissance astronomers thought it was supposed to be written as bait al-jauza, which means "armpit of the central one", thus leading to yad al-jawza becoming Betelgeuse. It is also called "the martial one" and was considered in Medieval astrology to portend military and civic honors.
