His parents; Alice and Frank Longbottom, were members of the original Order of the Phoenix and fought in the First Wizarding War. In November, 1981, Neville's parents were tortured into insanity by four Death Eaters with the Cruciatus Curse, regulating them into the permanent ward at St. Mungo's Hospital. Due to his parents' incapacitation, Neville was raised by his paternal grandmother, Augusta Longbottom. Neville became a close friend of Harry Potter after aiding him in stopping Quirinus Quirrell from taking the Philosopher's Stone. He was also one of the few who believed Harry didn't place his name in the Goblet of Fire in their fourth year, leading him to become Harry's best mate. Neville became an important member of Dumbledore's Army; the organization led by Harry. He fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and avenged his parents by killing Bellatrix Lestrange. After the takeover of Hogwarts by Death Eaters and the death of Albus Dumbledore, Neville reformed Dumbledore's Army and famously resisted the tyranny brought on by the Death Eaters who now taught at Hogwarts. During the final Battle of Hogwarts, Neville was able to pull the sword of Godric Gryffindor from the Sorting Hat and slew Voldemort's familiar, Nagini. After the war, Neville served a brief stint as an Auror before taking over for Professor Sprout as Hogwarts' Herbology professor and marrying fellow D.A. member Luna Lovegood. With her, he had two children; Harry Frank and Mia Pandora Longbottom. He became the godfather of Harry and Hermione's youngest child; Lily Luna Potter.
