Over the next twenty years, Gorkon was a staunch supporter of all of Sturka's actions with regards to their relationship with their galactic neighbors, especially the Terran Empire. However, by the early 2280s, Gorkon began to spot that Sturka's age and long duration as Regent was holding back the Empire and Gorkon had no choice to assassinate Sturka in front of the entire High Council. As Gorkon plunged a d'k tahg into Sturka's heart, the dying Regent thanked him for being a true friend and granting him an honorable death. Following his ascension to Regent he appointed his old ally General Chang as commander-in-chief of the Klingon Defense Forces and instructed him to increase warship production by constructing a large shipyard in orbit of Praxis. Unfortunately, following the explosion of Praxis in 2293 and the loss of the shipyards, the Empire found itself in a precarious situation and Gorkon decided to seek an alliance with the Terrans in exchange with their help in clearing up following the Praxis disaster. Shortly after he traveled to Earth aboard his flagship, the Kronos One, and met with Empress Hoshi Sato III to discuss terms for an alliance. Following these preliminary talks, Gorkon traveled to Khitomer to sign the Khitomer Accords alongside the Empress. Within the year, both Empires fought together in an invasion of the Cardassian Union and later the Romulan Star Empire. Gorkon was assassinated by a Tal Shiar agent during a state visit to the Korvat colonies in 2303. In his place his daughter, Azetbur was appointed as Regent.
