He was one of the senior aides of emperors Michael V and Constantine IX. Entering a monastic life, he was appointed abbot of the imperial Mangana Monastery. After his predecessor, Michael I Cerularius, was dismissed from the throne by Emperor Isaac I Comnenus, Constantine was elected Patriarch of Constantinople in 1059. Constantine III remained in office until his repose in 1063.
