Born in Staffordshire, he was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. Ordained in as a deacon in 1864 and as priest in 1865, he initially served as curate in Handsworth, near Birmingham. In 1866 he came to London as curate at St Mary, Bryanston Square. In 1868 he was made vicar of St Bartholomew’s, Sydenham. The benefice was in the gift of the Legge family and was conferred on him by half-brother, the 5th Earl of Dartmouth. In 1877 he was made an honorary canon of Rochester Cathedral by Bishop Anthony Thorold, much of south east London falling in the diocese at that time. In 1879 he was appointed vicar of Lewisham, again by his half-brother, and became rural dean of Greenwich in the following year. In 1886, in a reorganisation of church administration, he was made the first rural dean of Lewisham. From 1873 to 1876 he was a member of the London School Board, representing the Greenwich Division. In 1891 he left London to return to his native county as Bishop of Lichfield. He remained bishop until his death. Wikipedia page here [1].
