As a result, his best career finish came with a 15th place finish in one of the Daytona 500 qualifier events held at Daytona International Speedway in 1961. Pronger, though, is best known for his mysterious death. Pronger, always described as gruff and tough, disappeared in early 1971. On June 17, the FBI dropped its search and declared that Pronger was "missing at the hands of mafia agents." He is presumed dead, and due to his age, is probably dead now even if he had lived.
