Educated at Eton and Oxford, from 1933-38 he worked in India in his family's firm of Mackinnon, McKenzie & Co, merchants. When he returned to the UK he took a commission in a territorial battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. During the Second World War he fought in Europe and the Middle East and was awarded the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service Order. In 1946 he resumed his business career in the City of London as director of a merchant bank, Brown, Shipley & Co. He was chairman of the bank from 1953-63. At about this time he was briefly a member of the London County Council, when he was elected unopposed on 19 October 1947 to fill a vacancy in the representation of the City of London. He did not contest the next county council election in 1949. His business career continued as chairman of the Agricultural Credit Corporation from 1959–75 and of the Australia and New Zealand Banking Corporation 1975-77. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital from 1953, and chairman from 1968-75.
