Tensions rose after the Invasion of Naboo, in which the Sith revealed themselves and declared a withdrawal movement from the Republic. Compelled by the Galactic Senate, the Jedi went to the Separatist rallying world of Geonosis to open peace talks between the growing rebellion and the Republic. Instead, the Sith captured the Jedi sent and slated them for execution. A strike force of Jedi Knights and Masters, leading a large task force of clones, intervened, sparking the First Battle of Geonosis and then the war itself. Unbeknownst to all except Count Dooku, who was the figurehead leader of the Confederacy, the war was plotted, executed, and maintained by the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious. After he revealed himself to Anakin Skywalker, however, and failed to turn the latter to the dark side, Sidious was forced to retreat and reform the Confederacy into the Sith Confederacy, leading to Mon Mothma's rise to Chancellorship. Afterwards, a seventeen year ceasefire was declared, due to heavy losses on both sides.
