Born to well-to-do parents in the port city of New Trabzon, Mare Erythraeum, Mars, in the Sol System, Burgess progressed through public schooling and enrolled in the Vékézon Naval Academy in Vékézon, Mare Erythraeum, for four years, after which she was commissioned into the UNSC Navy as an Ensign. By the end of the Human-Covenant War, Emogene had reached the rank of full Lieutenant, which she earned after the Skirmish over Naples in 2550. She was stationed aboard the destroyer UNSC Saint-Nazaire of the 55th Destroyer Squadron when the Ur-Didact and his flagship Approach Mantle's Approach attacked the Earth in 2557. She was soon promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and before long, she transferred to the frigate Crucible as the ship's Executive Officer.
