  • In Native American mythology (specifically of the Coeur d’Alene tribe, from what is now Montana, Idaho, and Washington), Stcemqestcint were humanoid beings that wore buffalo skins and when sighted by humans would turn into tall trees until the human had gone out of visual range of them, at which point they transform back. If a person stares at them for long enough, the Stcemqestcint will be unable to take human form again and be stuck in arboreal form. They were noted to have rather putrid-smelling flesh. Stcemqestcint means “tree people”.
