When he tried to rob Goku, Oolong, and Bulma in the desert, Goku held his own, but was nearly defeated by Yamcha. However, he was rendered useless upon seeing Bulma, as he has an intense weakness of girls. He was saved by Pu'ar and then vowed to defeat Goku. He sneeks around their mobile home during the night and begins to look for the Dragon Balls while Pu'ar is distracting Oolong, yet is only stopped in his track by seeing Bulma naked. He escapes with Pu'ar again and begin to follow Goku, sometimes helping them, but only with the means to steal their Dragon Balls at the end. Eventually, he is captured by Emperor Pilaf along with Goku's gang and is locked up in a room designed to cook them alive. He escapes when Goku turns into a Great Ape and smashes the room through. The Dragon Balls are then used, but only to stop Pilaf's wish, resulting in a wish for panties. Disappointed he couldn't wish for the ability to be brave around girls and Bulma disappointed by not getting the perfect boyfriend, they begin a rocky relationship that sometimes hooks on and sometimes hooks off. Eventually, though, their rocky relationship becomes on the bottom of the priority list.
