abstract
  • The Man In The Moon (also known as Harold by Mother Nature) is a character who appeared in the cartoon show episode of the same name. He is the brother of Mother Nature and the controller of the moon's phases, and his job is to make sure that the moon shines full at every lunar cycle (one month). He is also a maker of cheese, which he feeds to the rats that keep him company up on the moon in his workshop. In the episode, the Man In The Moon grew sick and tired of feeling that nobody appreciated him except for the rats, and so left the moon around the time of the Festival of the Full Moon in the Smurf Village. This made the Smurfs rather fearful that there may not be a Festival of the Full Moon that month (especially for Baby Smurf, since it will be his first), but it made Father Time upset because it means that the tides will not turn and the calendars will not work, among other things. The Man In The Moon befriended Dreamy upon his arrival on Earth, and sees that things are much better on Earth than they are up on the Moon. He saw that the Smurfs hold a festival in his honor and was glad for it, but he was rather insistent upon not returning to the moon to do his job until he found out from Papa Smurf how much he really was cared about even by his own sister Mother Nature. Realizing that he had people that depended on him, the Man In The Moon was ready to return to the moon to do his work when a giant rat that Gargamel had transformed seized Dreamy. The Man In The Moon caught the rat's attention by feeding it his cheese, and thus turned the fearsome creature into a friendly creature that would keep him company as they departed from the village.
