Archer returned later in the year to claim a career-best 10th at Topeka and then ended the year 27th at Richmond. Archer had a one-year hiatus, Archer returned to competition in 1998, racing in the season-opening event at Walt Disney. Starting 25th in the field, Archer completed just a few laps before engine failure left him last (36th) in the race. Archer's final career race came in 1999, racing for Team K at Topeka. Securing a career-best 5th place start in the event, Archer completed every lap and ended his career with a respectable 16th place effort.
