abstract
  • Kim Mountjoy was elected to Parliament in July 2961 representing South Corinella. He was named Minister of Foreign Affairs in April 2965. He held the position until he formed a new cabinet. He was the first President to serve in the cabinet while being President. In 2964, Mountjoy launched a bid to become Deputy Leader of the Social Democrats. He received the most nominations but placed third on the parliamentary ballot. However, it was enough to put him on the ballot for the general electorate. He claimed 32% to Maurice Pompidou's 49%. Liana Tzampazi placed third and quickly endorsed Mountjoy. Despite her strong endorsement, Mountjoy was defeated by 1.06%. 11 years later, he launched a bid for the leadership. Again he received the most nominations of any candidate. He placed second on the first ballot, only behind Hilda Glass. Glass quickly realized that she would be unable to retain the leadership and decided to drop out. In the new election, Mountjoy received the second most nominations. He easily led on the first two ballots but narrowly defeated Kathy Borders on the third. The vote was 62-54. In 2976, the Commonwealth-SDP coalition collapsed. Prime Minister George Waddington told Mountjoy that he believed that the parties were too different to form a functioning government. Mountjoy disagreed and promised to support the Prime Minister. In the December election, Mountjoy won 20% of the vote but helped Waddington win the presidency by endorsing him for the second round. Waddington returned the favor by reforming the coalition and giving the party cabinet posts. Despite his defeat, Mountjoy saw the party gain 28 parliamentary seats. However, the party caucus was unhappy with the results and narrowly ousted him as General Secretary. Kim Mountjoy resigned from Parliament soon after. On October 12, 2987, Mountjoy and his entire family died when their plane crashed into the Blu-Monet Building in Gevaro. Mountjoy was 59. His wife, Annabelle, was 53. His daughters and their husbands died in the crash as well. Marie and John Dunn at the age of 33 and 34 respectively. Rosemary and David Kernot died at 29 and 35 respectively. Jocelyn and Wally Lees died at 22 and 23 respectively. Christabel and Peter Milne died at the age of 20 and 22 respectively. At the time of their deaths, Christabel and Peter had only been married for three months.
