King played collegiately for the Kansas Jayhawks and was the first black starter in Kansas Jayhawks basketball history in 1954. A teammate of Wilt Chamberlain, he played in the famous 1957 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament game, where the Jayhawks lost to the North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball in Overtime (sports). The , Tweener (basketball) was selected out of the University of Kansas by the Boston Celtics with the 48th overall pick in the 6th round of the 1957 NBA Draft.
