  • In 1977, while working alone, he was dispatched to Cotton Cove to investigate a report of a white male subject harassing fishermen in the area. Upon his arrival, he observed one nude white male subject approaching his unit. Before he could react, the subject reached through the open driver's window, and ripped his badge off his uniform. The subject then tossed the badge into the river. Haines successfully cuffed the subject, who was under the influence of PCP. Attempts at recovering his badge were unsuccessful.

Haines was at the Oak Tree Mall where he saw stolen Luis D. Pate's car and reported so to the Dept. As Sonny Bonds and Keith Robinson arrived, Haines went to check for witnesses and found Shelly Wingate (Camille Rogers). When Bonds dived at the lake to recover Pate's body, he also found the missing badge in the middle screen of the lake. He submitted it to Big John along with the rest of the evidence he collected. It is unknown whether Haines eventually got his badge back.
