Angela Rossini herself was based loosely on the real life actress Adah Isaacs Menken, who portrayed the character of Mazeppa in the melodrama of the same name. This was her best known role, possibly attributed to the fact that at the climax of the play she seemingly appeared nude (she was wearing nude tights) while riding a horse.
