Grumm got lost from the others and he ended up with Rose, and Grumm then became a prisoner in the pygmy shrew lair. Grumm was reunited with Martin and Rose and they freed Pallum from the shrews. Together they went North to the marshes and almost got eaten by the cannibal lizards but escaped with the help of the Warden of Marshwood Hill, a great heron, and they got to Boldred the owl's lair, but were chased by the savage Gawtrybe squirrels. Boldred the owl saved them from the evil savages, and Grumm enlisted her help in fighting Badrang. The rebellion soon got underway and they returned to Fortress Marshank. There was a large battle and Grumm fought in it, killing many vermin but he was unable to stop Badrang killing Rose, his friend, and Martin killed Badrang in revenge. Grumm soon returned to Noonvale along with his friends.
